We weren’t the wealthiest of folk growing up, so I had to make a choice. One day in 1978 I was with mum collecting my comic when I clapped my eyes on a new release – Star Wars Weekly, also by Marvel. The content was invariably black ink on cream newsprint but the vibrant covers always impressed. I remember to this day watching them flick through the folders to find my pristine weekly read. I’d go with my mum to the local newsagents who would have filed a copy of the comic away in a cabinet. I have fond memories of Spider-Man Weekly. Growing up in the 1970s, Marvel comics played a big part in my life. Writer: Jason Aaron Penciller: John Cassaday Colorist: Laura Martin Cover artist: John Cassaday Editor: Jordan D. Instead of simply saying that Fonny is in shock, Tish chooses to describe his emotional response to the reader by imagining what his face would look like in a similar context. In this passage, Tish uses evocative language to show the reader what, exactly, Fonny's face looked like when he learns the news that he is going to be a father. "His face looked as though it were plunging into water" (5). Tish uses descriptive words such as "dim," "dark" and "strange" to give the reader a good sense of what it looked like at that moment. This image shows what is left after Tish and Fonny make love for the first time. "On him and on the bed and on me and, in the dim light and against our dark bodies, the effect was as of some strange anointing" (81). And it doesn’t come with political aspects, but you’re treated as if it did.” “You have all of the public aspects of the job. “When people are going to criticize everything from the causes you support to the china that you pick to the clothing that you wear, how do you navigate that?” asks Lisa Kathleen Graddy, curator of the first ladies collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. From Louisa Adams to Melania Trump, numerous first ladies have proven reluctant to take on the role. Shortly after Martha Washington became the inaugural first lady of the United States, she described her life in a letter to her niece as “more like a state prisoner than anything else.” Though Washington eventually adjusted to her status as a presidential spouse, her initial reaction to the unofficial position proved prescient for generations of first ladies. This is duty to country in its most shining and unalloyed form. This is how they transformed duty from obligation to the sublime, from an act that shaped not only their present, but also spoke to ages hence. And midwife to this sacrifice born of love was the hope that their example would inspire future generations to bear the heavy burdens that freedom demands. Love for the freedom their sacrifice would bequeath to their families and their countrymen. Love for the men on their right and left who were willing to die for them. Why, then, did they choose to lay down their lives for their country? Every soldier knows they’re taking a risk in war, but the Greeks at Thermopylae knew this was a suicide mission. I’m sure many Greeks initially acted out of what we commonly consider duty, or perhaps a desire to avoid shame or to fulfill the requirements of the role - soldiers are expected to fight, after all.īut surely this most elemental form of duty alone can’t explain their decision to fight to the death. It’s the story of the Battle of Thermopylae and the 300 Spartans - along with roughly 7,000 other Greeks - who chose to stand and die, giving Greece precious time to organize a defense against the invading Persians. Steven Pressfield’s historical fiction novel “Gates of Fire” captivatingly illustrates how duty can transmute from obligation to honor, from a vision of the present to an investment in the future. A satisfying first novel with a realistic but heartening ending." -Booklist "The small-town dynamics draw on recognizable characters without becoming stereotypes Great-Aunt Grace, for instance, is full of surprises.
